Research Areas /
Prof. Chun Juei (C. J.) Chou has been an assistant professor since 1st August 2009 at the Department of Industrial Design, College of Planning and Design, National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, Taiwan. He named his office "EADS Lab". EADS indicates CJ Chou's four research areas. E stands for Ethics. That is, design should help product users to follow ethical rules and social norms. A stands for Altruism. That is, design should help to make people's life better. D stands for Disaster. That is, design should help to prevent environment and people from natural and accidental disasters and minimize damage. S stands for Sustainability. That is, Design should equally consider the balance among ecology, people, and economic development.
Short-Term Plan /
Prof. Chou opened an elective graduate course titled "Design Research for Universal Ethics" since Spring 2011. The purpose of this course is to make graduate students realize that they can apply design and innovation methods to help people to regain their good nature. Especially in such over developed society, values are twisted, people are indifferent, while sympathy and altruism are rare. In this course, graduate students are encouraged to discuss how ethical behavior and humane value can be practiced in our daily life. We expect that design can be creatively applied to improve people's attitude, behavior, and life.
Short-Term Intention /
In order to enable graduate students understand how design can be applied to deal with social and environmental issues, each weekly class of "Design Research for Universal Ethics" is divided into three sessions within three hours: (1) lecture pertaining to one existing or future issue such as global warming; (2) introduction to a design method such as Structured Planning; (3) practical application of the design method for students to deal with the issue previously introduced. Weekly topics of this course are shown in the table below. For example, observation and interview are applied to analyze the elder's behavior and needs. In this way, graduate students in design are able to discover, analyze, practice, and discuss interesting cases, including products, service and business models for universal ethics. The intention of this course is to make graduate students decent and noble global citizens in addition to outstaning designers.

Research Topics /
Doctoral and master's thesis topics are based on the acheivement of "Design Research for Universal Ethics" as shown in the table below. For example, one master's student applies "identification of form restriction" to analyze components of a certain product. The purpose is to identify recyclable components made by compatible materials. If the designer connects such components together as many as possible within the product, this product can be disassembled and recycled in a more efficient way after discarded. For example, one flashlight is composed by four components, including one light base, one light cover, one body, and one battery case. It is hypothetical that the last three items are recyclable and made by the same compatible plastic material. The light base is made by non-recyclable metal. After redesigning its architecture, this flashlight can be more easily disassembled and recycled by one step - taking the light base out of the flashlight.

Long-Term Plan /
Based on "Design Research for Universal Ethics", EADS Lab has gradually achieved several researches such as ethical design, altruistic design, sustainable design, and design for mitigating disasters. Prof. Chou expects to open an elective undergraduate course titled "Design for Universal Ethics" after five years. Its purpose is to enable undergraduate students actively practice design theories, methods, and tools for ethical intention. In addition, an elective graduate course titled "Research for Sustainability and Mitigating Disasters" and an elective undergraduate course titled "Design for Sustainability and Mitigating Disasters" are planned to be opened in the future. Therefore, research topics in Industrial Design will be enlarged to cover more significant areas such as environmental protection and social security.
